Welcome to my Home Page | Welcome to Luis Matos web site (Bienvenidos al Sitio de Internet de Luis Matos) | The Dominican Republic
| The Dominican Republic (República Dominicana or Quisqueya) is a nation located in the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean region. Hispaniola lies west of Puerto Rico and east of Cuba. The Dominican Republic is the site of the first permanent European settlement in the Americas, its capital Santo Domingo, which was also the first colonial capital in the Americas. It is the site of the first cathedral, University, European-built road, European-built fortress, and more. |
Industry and economy
| The Dominican Republic is the largest economy in the Central American and Caribbean region. It is a lower middle-income developing country primarily dependent on natural resources and government services.
For most of its history (up to independence) the colony was known by
the name of its present capital, Santo Domingo. At present, it is one
of the few countries in the world with a demonym-based description serving as a name. For example, the French Republic
is known as France, the American republic is known as the United States
of America, but the Dominican Republic has no such equivalent.
